kp.6 Khuddakapatha

The Discourse on the Treasures

Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament,
may the minds of all those beings be happy,
and may they listen carefully to what is said.

Therefore, all of you beings, be attentive,
be friendly towards this generation of men,
they who bring offerings by day and by night,
as they are heedful please protect them.

Whatever riches there are—here or hereafter
or in the heavens—that excellent treasure
is not equal unto the Realised One—
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Craving’s end, dispassion, deathlessness, excellence—
that which the concentrated Sakyan sage attained—
there is nothing that is equal to the Dhamma—
this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

That which the great Buddha praised as being pure—
the concentration said to have immediate result
no equal to that concentration is found—
this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Those eight individuals praised by the good—
there are these four pairs of persons
those disciples of the Fortunate One are worthy of gifts,
those things that have been given to them have great fruit—
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Those who have firm minds that are devoted to
Gotama’s teaching, being free from sense desire—
having attained and entered the deathless—
are enjoying the stillness, obtained for free—
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Just as a locking post stuck fast in the earth
does not waver on account of the four winds,
just like this, I say, is the person who is true,
the one who sees the noble truths completely—
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Those who clearly distinguish the noble truths,
which have been well preached by the one with great wisdom,
no matter how great they become in heedlessness
still they do not take up an eighth existence—
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Together with his attainment of seeing Emancipation
there are three things that are given up:
embodiment view, uncertainty, and
whatever grasping at virtue and practices there is.
He is free from rebirth in the four lower worlds,
and he is incapable of the six great crimes—
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Whatever bad actions he performs
by way of body, speech, or mind,
he is incapable of covering it up:
this incapacity is said of one who has seen the state of peace
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Just like a tall woodland tree crowned with flowers
in the summer months, in the early summer,
just like this he preached the Dhamma which is best,
which goes to Emancipation, the highest benefit—
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

The best one, knowing the best, gave the best, brought the best,
he preached the best Dhamma, which is unsurpassed—
this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

The old is destroyed, and nothing new is produced,
their minds are unexcited by future rebirth,
they have destroyed the seeds, and have no desire for growth,
the wise are still, just as this lamp is still
this excellent treasure is in the Sangha:
by virtue of this truth may there be safety!

Spoken by Sakka, lord of the gods:

Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament,
we all revere the realised Buddha who is
honoured by gods and men—may there be safety!

Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament,
we all revere the realised Dhamma which is
honoured by gods and men—may there be safety!

Whatever beings have come together here,
whether of the earth or in the firmament,
we all revere the realised Sangha which is
honoured by gods and men—may there be safety!

The Jewel Discourse

“Whatever beings (non-humans) are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial, may they all have peace of mind, and may they listen attentively to these words:

“O beings, listen closely. May you all radiate loving-kindness to those human beings who, by day and night, bring offerings to you (offer merit to you). Wherefore, protect them with diligence.

“Whatever treasure there be either in the world beyond, whatever precious jewel there be in the heavenly worlds, there is nought comparable to the Tathagata (the perfect One). This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“That Cessation, that Detachment, that Deathlessness (Nibbana) supreme, the calm and collected Sakyan Sage (the Buddha) had realized. There is nought comparable to this (Nibbana) Dhamma. This precious jewel is the Dhamma. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“The Supreme Buddha extolled a path of purity (the Noble Eightfold Path) calling it the path which unfailingly brings concentration. There is nought comparable to this concentration. This precious jewel is the Dhamma. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“The eight persons extolled by virtuous men constitute four pairs. They are the disciples of the Buddha and are worthy of offerings. Gifts given to them yield rich results. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“With a steadfast mind, and applying themselves well in the dispensation of the Buddha Gotama, free from defilements, they have attained to that which should be attained (arahantship) encountering the Deathless. They enjoy the Peace of Nibbana freely obtained. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“As a post deep-planted in the earth stands unshaken by the winds from the four quarters, so, too, I declare is the righteous man who comprehends with wisdom the Noble Truths. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“Those who realized the Noble Truths well taught by him who is profound in wisdom (the Buddha), even though they may be exceedingly heedless, they will not take an eighth existence in the realm of sense spheres. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“With his gaining of insight he abandons three states of mind, namely self-illusion, doubt, and indulgence in meaningless rites and rituals, should there be any. He is also fully freed from the four states of woe, and therefore, incapable of committing the six major wrongdoings. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“Any evil action he may still do by deed, word or thought, he is incapable of concealing it; since it has been proclaimed that such concealing is impossible for one who has seen the Path of Nibbana. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“As the woodland groves though in the early heat of the summer month are crowned with blossoming flowers even so is the sublime Dhamma leading to the calm of Nibbana which is taught by the Buddha for the highest good. This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“The Peerless Excellent one (the Buddha) the Knower of Nibbana, the Giver of Nibbana, the Bringer of the Noble Path, taught the excellent Dhamma. This precious jewel is the Buddha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“Their past kamma is spent, their new kamma no more arises, their mind to future becoming is unattached. Their germ of rebirth-consciousness has died, they have no more desire for re-living. Those wise men fade out of existence as the flame of this lamp which has just faded away. This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this asseveration of the truth may there be happiness.

“Whatever beings (non-human) are assembled here, terrestrial or celestial, come let us salute the Buddha, the Tathagata (the perfect One), honored by gods and men. May there be happiness.

“Whatever beings are assembled here terrestrial or celestial, come let us salute the perfect Dhamma, honored by gods and men. May there be happiness

“Whatever beings are assembled here terrestrial or celestial, come let us salute the perfect Sangha, honored by gods and men. May there be happiness.”

Jewels

Whatever beings are gathered here,
Whether on the earth or in the sky,
May all these beings be happy,
And may they carefully listen to this speech.

Pay attention, all you beings,
Have loving-kindness for humans,
Day and night they bring offerings,
Therefore guard them diligently.

Of all the treasures here and beyond,
Even the magnificent jewels in the heavens,
There is nothing equal to the Tathāgata –
This is the magnificent jewel called the Buddha.
By this truth may there be well-being.

Elimination, dispassion, deathlessness, excellence,
What Sakyamuni attained in samādhi,
There is nothing like that Dhamma –
This is the magnificent jewel called the Dhamma.
By this truth may there be well-being.

What the Supreme Buddha praised as pure,
Spoken of as the knowledge arising directly from samādhi,
No equal to that samādhi can be found –
This is the magnificent jewel called the Dhamma.
By this truth may there be well-being.

The eight kinds of praiseworthy beings,
Those who are in four pairs,
They are worthy of donations, the Blissful One‘s disciples,
And gifts given to them produce great benefit.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Those whose minds are well-directed and steady,
Those who have set aside sensuality and followed Gotama‘s instructions,
They have reached the Deathless and immersed themselves in it,
Freely enjoying the enlightenment they acquired.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Just as a pillar firmly planted in the ground
Cannot be shaken by the four winds,
I say it is the same for a good person
Who clearly sees the noble truths.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Those for whom the noble truths become clear,
As well-taught by the One of Deep Wisdom,
No matter how negligent they are,
They will not take on an eighth existence.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

One who has attained vision will inevitably discard three things:
Belief in self-existence, skepticism, and habitual practices.
They are freed from the four kinds of downfall,
And it is impossible for them to do any of the six terrible things.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Even if they perform a harmful deed with body, speech, or mind,
It is impossible for them to conceal it.
This is said to be impossible for one who has attained right view.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Like a forest grove in full bloom during the first month of summer
Is the excellent Dhamma that he taught,
Which leads to enlightenment – the paramount benefit.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Buddha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

The Excellent One –
Who knows what is excellent, gives what is excellent, brings what is excellent –
Taught the unsurpassed excellent Dhamma.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Buddha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

They have eliminated the old and do not produce the new,
Minds free of lust for future existence,
They have eliminated the seeds and have no interest in their growth,
The steadfast ones extinguish them, just like a lamp.
This is the magnificent jewel called the Saṅgha,
By this truth may there be well-being.

Whatever beings are gathered here,
Whether on the earth or in the sky,
The Tathāgata is honored by devas and humans,
We bow to the Buddha – may there be well-being.

Whatever beings are gathered here,
Whether on the earth or in the sky,
The Tathāgata is honored by devas and humans,
We bow to the Dhamma – may there be well-being.

Whatever beings are gathered here,
Whether on the earth or in the sky,
The Tathāgata is honored by devas and humans,
We bow to the Saṅgha – may there be well-being.
