tha-ap.376 Thera Apadana

Paṭṭipupphiya

When the Sambuddha, the Great Sage,
Padumuttara passed away,
all the people came together;
they are carrying off his corpse.

When the corpse was being removed,
when the drums were being sounded,
happy, with pleasure in my heart,
I offered a red lodh flower.

In the hundred thousand aeons
since I did that flower-pūjā,
I’ve come to know no bad rebirth:
the fruit of worshipping relics.

Being in Best Buddha’s presence
was a very good thing for me.
The three knowledges are attained;
I have done what the Buddha taught!

My defilements are now burnt up;
all new existence is destroyed.
Like elephants with broken chains,
I am living without constraint.

The four analytical modes,
and these eight deliverances,
six special knowledges mastered,
I have done what the Buddha taught!

Thus indeed Venerable Paṭṭipupphiya Thera spoke these verses.

The legend of Paṭṭipupphiya Thera is finished.
